A recent court filing indicates that Hunter Biden is currently living outside the United States as he faces ongoing legal and financial disputes. The disclosure was made in an April 6 filing submitted in Washington, D.C., by his attorney, Barry Coburn, in connection with a lawsuit brought by law firm Winston & Strawn.
The firm is seeking payment for legal services related to Biden’s previous cases, The Daily Mail reported. The filing states that Biden “lives abroad” and argues that he is unable to pay outstanding legal fees. According to the complaint, the firm claims he owes more than $50,000 for services provided over several years.
Coburn described Biden as “impecunious,” indicating he does not have sufficient funds to cover additional legal expenses tied to the case. The filing also notes that Biden has not retained billing consultants, forensic accountants or electronic discovery vendors due to financial constraints.
Biden has previously acknowledged significant financial challenges. During a podcast appearance last year, he said he was in approximately $17 million in debt, largely related to legal costs accumulated over several years.
His legal matters have included federal tax and firearms cases, along with multiple civil disputes. Abbe Lowell, a partner at Winston & Strawn, represented Biden in those proceedings.
The case remains ongoing in D.C
The law firm filed its complaint in June, alleging that Biden failed to pay for legal services despite nearly three years of representation. The case remains ongoing in D.C. Superior Court.
While the filing does not specify Biden’s current location, he has previously spent time overseas, including in South Africa. In May 2025, he was photographed in Cape Town, where his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, is from.
In a podcast interview later that year, Biden said he was splitting time between the United States and South Africa. “We’re trying to be between Cape Town and the States. We go back and forth,” he said.
Biden also spoke positively about the city, describing it as “the most beautiful city in the world” and highlighting his experiences living there part-time.
Despite the filing stating he lives abroad, Biden has continued to travel to the United States. Social media posts from family members show him attending a recent Easter gathering in California with relatives, including his father, former President Joe Biden.
His financial situation has also involved support from private sources
His financial situation has also involved support from private sources. Reports indicate he received loans from attorney Kevin Morris totaling more than $6 million, including funds used to cover tax obligations and legal expenses.
Biden has also attempted to generate income through an art career. Between 2021 and 2024, his paintings reportedly sold for more than $1 million to various buyers.
However, court filings indicate that demand for his artwork has declined in recent years. In a March 2025 filing, Biden said he had sold only one piece of art since December 2023, for $36,000.
He has also cited ongoing financial obligations, including legal costs and personal expenses, as contributing factors to his current financial position.
The latest filing underscores continuing legal and financial challenges for Biden as litigation over unpaid legal fees moves forward. The case is expected to continue as both sides address the claims in court.
