Special Election To Replace MTG Sets Up Big Fight In Congress

The Georgia special election will fill the congressional seat once held by Marjorie Taylor Greene. She left Congress in January after becoming a Trump ally turned critic.

President Donald Trump endorsed Clay Fuller in the crowded race. Fuller is a former prosecutor and Air Force veteran.

Georgia Special Election Tests Trump’s Influence

Trump endorsed Fuller during a visit to the district last month. However, nearly 20 candidates still remain in the race.

Several Republican candidates describe themselves as strong MAGA supporters. Many promise to support Trump’s political agenda.

Crowded Republican Field in Georgia Special Election

The president joined the race to avoid a runoff and fill the seat quickly. Republicans want to strengthen Speaker Mike Johnson’s narrow House majority.

Fuller said he will be a warrior for Trump on Capitol Hill. Other candidates also pledged loyalty to the president.

Candidates Voice Support and Independence

Tom Gray, a pastor running for the seat, expressed support for Trump. He also said candidates remain independent thinkers and decision-makers.

The district covers 10 counties from Atlanta suburbs to the Appalachian foothills. It reaches the Tennessee state line.

Democratic Challenge in Georgia Special Election

The district strongly supports Trump but includes Democrats and independents. Their votes could influence the election outcome.

Shawn Harris is the Democratic candidate in the race. The retired Marine brigadier general lost to Greene in 2024.

Possible Runoff and Ongoing Political Tensions

If no candidate wins over 50 percent, a runoff will occur. The top two candidates will face each other on April 7.

Candidates must run again later this year starting with the May 19 primary. Some voters remain upset about the dispute between Trump and Greene.
