A significant political divide emerged in Washington after John Fetterman, the Democratic senator from Pennsylvania, publicly supported military strikes ordered by Donald Trump against targets in Iran. Writing on social media, Fetterman praised the president’s decision, saying Trump was willing to take necessary action to achieve lasting stability in the region. He also expressed support for the U.S. military and Israel, emphasizing what he described as the importance of decisive leadership during times of international conflict.
Fetterman’s remarks placed him at odds with many members of his own party, who have called for greater congressional oversight following the strikes. Responding to discussions among Democrats about invoking the War Powers Resolution to demand a congressional vote, the senator made clear he would not support the effort. In a post online, he described himself as a “committed Democrat” but said he fully backed the military operation, which he referred to as “Operation Epic Fury.”
Speaking later during an appearance on Fox & Friends Weekend, Fetterman reiterated his stance, arguing that achieving real peace sometimes requires strong actions rather than statements alone. He said that while many leaders talk about peace, meaningful stability often follows decisive military steps. According to Fetterman, the strikes represented the kind of action he believes can lead to long-term security in the region.
The Pennsylvania senator also responded to criticism from Thomas Massie, a Republican congressman from Kentucky who questioned the legality of the operation without explicit congressional authorization. Massie argued that the strikes amounted to acts of war not approved by Congress. Fetterman dismissed the criticism and framed the conflict as being directed at Iran’s governing regime rather than the Iranian people, saying he stood firmly behind both the U.S. military and Israel.
Other lawmakers also voiced strong support for the president’s decision. Lindsey Graham praised the operation and called it a necessary step toward stability in the Middle East, while Roger Wicker, chair of the United States Senate Armed Services Committee, described the mission as a critical effort to counter threats from Iran’s military capabilities. According to U.S. officials, the strikes targeted missile and military facilities believed to pose an immediate danger, while avoiding political leadership targets. In a video message, President Trump urged Iranian citizens to remain safe and suggested that the country’s future should ultimately be decided by its own people.
